Art In Celebration of LGBT+ History

February marks LGBT+ history month. Throughout history, art has been used to celebrate, to show defiance and to represent the soul and, with this in mind, few groups have been as expressive, vibrant and powerful in the art world as the LGBT+ community. We are proud to feature these emotive and eye-catching pieces from artists celebrating different aspects of this:

The rainbow – now a universally recognized Pride symbol- features in many artists work and displaying a piece of art depicting a rainbow can show support for the LGBT+ community in as bold or subtle a way as preferred. Two artists featuring a rainbow in their work are Rick van den Berg and Mooven’s.

The erotic art work of Rick van den Berg is instantly recognizable: “Horny Beast” is a fun take on erotica, showing an encounter between a woman and a beast with rainbow coloured horns. A festival costume or a fantasy? We don’t know! “Victory Booty Whooty” evokes the triumphant atmosphere of a carnival or Gay Pride celebration with the subject’s colourful lingerie and rainbow in the background.

The work of Jeremy Le Mouel aka Mooven’s also captures the feeling of strength and victory but in almost direct colour contrast. His black and white paintings use the occasional touch of colour- drawing the eye toward the rainbow painted on the subject’s arm in “LGBT Drap” and the crowns in “Les Rois” (the kings)- a powerful image depicting two men embracing.

There are many opportunities to show symmetry and form in same sex themed erotic art, but while bisexuality is often overlooked, the award-winning artist Sergio Bleda’s “Too Much?” shows a visceral erotic encounter between three people, using negative space to great effect.

An erotic artwork makes a meaningful and deeply personal gift. Samarel paints encounters between opposite and same sex couples, using intense jewel tones to create a dreamlike and surreal atmosphere in which the lovers are the primary focus. “Lesbian Lovers in King Size Bed”, “Hot Men Making Love” and “Fantasy- Golden Girls” all feature same sex couples and range from romantic to sexually charged in theme.

In order for artists to freely create both romantic and erotic art featuring members of the LGBT+ community – and even express themselves through their art, there has been struggle, stigma, misunderstanding and pain. Yet through all of this and the community’s defiance and strength, protests, petitions and pride, we are making progress across the world.

Celebrating the neon tones, the exuberant marches and the refusal to ‘sit down and be quiet’, Susan Diamond’s feminist themed artworks feature beautiful human (and human-like) creatures literally sitting on top of their cities- owning their environment and demanding the viewer’s admiration.
Her painting “Fuck You” is a portrait of an androgynous character in bright glam rock makeup – a perfect depiction of the LGBT+ community’s strength. Long may it continue and be celebrated in art.
